is not "burled"; there is no such action as burling -- despite what you may have read in certain automobile advertising. (Sorry to take this out on you; I've been saving this one up for a while !) Burls are whorls in the grain of wood, usually found in the form of growths exterior to the trunk (the bole) of a tree. These growths can be sliced into veneer, like ordinary bole wood.

My colleague points out that an object with burl applied might be referred to as "burled" -- so the dashboard would be burled, not the walnut. Madison Avenue please copy. . .
What's next; "marbled" stone, or "transparented" glass ?
