Even though as a collector I admittedly have the usual trouble with the knock-off aspect of your endeavor, I have decided that I very much like your table as a work of art.
The piece talks directly about the inherent dilemma that it raises, and now asks a question about authenticity in a rather interesting and personalized way. (adding the copyright symbol)
It has a "point of view" now, which for me, transcends the realm of furniture design. It does so not because of any refinement of, or great feat of craft (in the traditional sense), but because of the idea.
You did apply your obvious skills very well, but in the end, the true success of your skills is that they become "invisible". The skills serve the idea very well in that they assume a generic and factory-like, standard. (Take this as a compliment, because it IS one.)
Never underestimate the power of an idea.
I guess we called that
"conceptual" art at one time . . . ?
I agree. I was going to comment on the quality of the prefinished surface, as it aligns well with the Eames aesthetic, which (it seems to me) combines juicy and "organic" form with a high degree of finish -- no sloppy edges or undefined detail. The new tables with their ultra-neat graphic appliqué carry on this aesthetic quite admirably.
The technique was described as "stencil," I believe. This sort of work is often accomplished via silk-screen printing. But that's not how this was done ?
Keep up the good work !
Exotic veneers are fun!

bottom left rosewood
bottom right is i think teak?
top right is black ash
top left is the the bitch plywood
and the big sheet of the beautiful black walnut is what i think i am gonna do surfboard table in. there is a protective coat that needs to be sanded off before wipe on poly is applied. gorgeous stuff. The size is like 8inch to sHort tho so I would have to change up the ellipcal size
the slippery slope
of indulgence.
(So just to be clear, we are not talking "ideas" and "art" any more here. No big "C" or anything game changing. Now you are just making a knockoff surfboard table for yourself, right? I am fine with you making one for yourself, but one WHAT? What is it going to be now?)
Now you're going have a wood grain surface instead of simple black or white laminate? AND you are going to make it a different size, therefore making the proportion of the top to the bases different?
The scale and proportion of a piece is part of the design. Its presence. So is the surface treatment, and the way it works with the shape.
You might not yet realize what your nervous system likes about a surfboard table. But whatever makes you like it won't even BE THERE any more, with the changes you are considering.
These choices were carefully considered and deliberated over, by a master of design, and you are just gonna play casual with almost every variable, simply because you like wood grain and the sheet is too small?
I shudder to think of what Ray would say.
Why call it a surfboard table, when one of those will be nowhere to be seen?
I am also reminded of something tktoo said to you early on.
edit: I found his quote: "You seem like a good kid. I'll bet that if you really think about what folks have offered here, you'll learn something more important than what's involved in fabricating replicas."
benefit of the doubt
to anyone but you Lunchbox. Hey at least I tried.
I remember you took similar cheap shots at Jackson Pollock's work, so theres that. And yes the C makes the OP the next big PE (postmodern enema)
But seriously, I was going to suggest that he do the surfboard table in black sealcoat, since sealcoat is art. Besides being the right color.
Our OP is feeling more like Onegroovydude every day. (as Woody pointed out early on)
He is much more polite than OGD though. And doesn't seem to do meth.
