Robert, I
kind of know what you're talking about -- but, are we to accept that once a modern (Twentieth Century) artist has interpreted a given form and/or material, that discipline is no longer available for serious exploration by subsequent designers ? Nobody can use fiberglass or molded plywood or leather slung on metal tubing -- and expect to be taken seriously ? Do we give our MCM heros that much power over our own choices ?

What of Gehry's Cloud then Robert?
Is it a matter of scale, context, or, as you say, less effective photography?

Like most of Gehry's design...
It's utter shite.
And call me a cynic, but the OP and subsequent replies following Robert's comments seem a wee but suspicious. I mean, paper mache and a light bulb does not a design make.

Oh, you'd not be a cynic, lunchbox, but a critic,
like the restuvus, and your opinion is as welcome and valid as any other.
To me, the whole MCM thing can get a bit too rectilinear and hard-edge sometimes. While I'm certainly no Gehry fan, I do think accent pieces like his Cloud and the OP's lamps can help to break the severity that some interiors suffer from.

Cheers, tktoo...
It's not that I don't like some of the Cloud lamp forms. It's more to do with Robert's point. In some design forms, it's very hard for me to stomach a particular design as actual design. I mean, if you or I could come up with it or something strikingly similar given a few hours and the proper resources( and I'm confident I and many on this forum could), it's very hard for me to give any credit to said "designer".
Although a bit harsh I'd liken it to the overly contrived, commercial music of today which is nothing more than pretty faces playing recycled songs at the whims of tone deaf record execs. Bitter much? (-; Point being if you know the makeup of the media, it's nigh on impossible to appreciate anything.
As for my cynic remark, I was actually referring to the three overly praiseful posts following Robert's. Strikingly similar, no?

.
design/designer/designed....I think its a mistake to think they are all mutually inclusive, the miniscule fraction of our built environment represneted in desgn mags and thought about by design enthusiasts is so narrow and constrained that something like the lamps appeals to me, perhaps its the low skill, reactive here-we-go quickly nature of them I like.
Its the very artlessnes Robert dislikes I find attractive and of course the visual science fiction associations, my comments were not meant as desgn critique, other than the practical concern of the fire hazard I'm not sure its possible to critque them very deeply.
To say that anyone of us could have made them with a few materials is true but I think its good to remeber that we ourselves havn't bothered to put the effort in.

It's hard to be original these days, it seems.
I apologize for my my readiness. It's the holidays. What, with this being the middle of Zappadan and all, I've allowed myself to get caught up in the spirit.
A chrome dinette for all!
(I wonder how this will translate to Mandarin?)
