hi,
bought this knoll international bureau the other day with a stunning grey paint finish to the top. i think you'll agree that if florence knoll could have seen this she would have scrapped that natural wood approach to her office furniture in a flash... or not. seriously, i was really pleased to find that the paint finish pretty much peeled off when i applied a little heat (using an iron and cloth) but it revealed a top that was both scuffed from light sanding and discolored in parts. in addition, the edges all seem to have been sanded right back.
can anyone tell me:
1) if the wooden top is veneered or solid walnut (the table weighs a ton)
2) what is the normal finish on the wooden top (oil or varnish), and
3) what is the best way to get it back to it's original condition?
any help much appreciated!
cheers and keep up the great work!
jon
Some better photos would help...
Some better photos would help. It is very, very likely veneer.
If someone has sanded through the veneer and rounded the edges, you have to consider veneering a new top. This is a fairly advanced sort of thing to do on your own, although not impossible. Somebody with a large vacuum bag for veneer work would have an easier time doing it.
hi leif,
and thanks for your message. tried uploading pics yesterday but for some reason i kept getting an error message. hopefully these will upload today.
yes the veneer has been sanded away on the corner and is not something that i would like to redo myself but it's probably something i can live with as it's only on one part of the table.
as you can see the scuffing on the top is quite light but there are patches of discoloration and worn patches.
hope you can help.
thanks,
jon
