Is it okay to refinish a Lane coffee table from the 1950s?

Or will this destroy its value? The top surface has numerous scratches and marks that take away from the beauty of the table. I've already tried scratch cover polish and rubbing the surface with extra fine steel wool and the scratches are still there. I'd like to remove this finish and re-apply a new one. Thanks for any tips.

I would
refinish it. Lane coffee and end tables are a dime a dozen.

P.S.
Be careful. Some of them have veneer inlays. For example, the ones with the big "dovetail" detail on the top are not true dovetails--they're just veneer decoration and if you sand them too strenuously you will ruin the table.
