One night, when I couldn't sleep, I was whittling away hours on my cell phone internet connection googling for information about some George Nelson furniture pieces I have. Somehow, I came across this forum and realized if anyone could help me out it would be you guys. Since I was a child (daughter of an architect and artist) I have enjoyed MCM furniture. Full disclosure: I don't know everything about every mid-century designer like I once thought I did! In fact, after reading several people's blogs and forums like this, I admit I know very little. blah. blah. blah.

The point I'm attempting to get to:
I've luckily inherited several George Nelson by Herman Miller furniture pieces, recently. I even have the original 1949 HM catalog they were ordered from. However, I expected that I could find information on these pieces easily online, to help guide me to 1) how to safely refinish them, 2) decoration inspiration, and 3) approximate valuations. Some of the pieces were easily identified (dressers, vanity, armchairs, desk, etc), but some pieces I can't seem to find anywhere other than in my HM catalog. Is there a website that I can go to for more information? Items I can't find anything about are 2 end tables: one (item #4742) has a round speaker on the front, roll-top flat top, and a record player inside. The other (item #4744) has a glass top, shelf and drawer in front, and 2 planters on the back, with a shelf on the backside, too. They are both approximately 35" deep x 17" wide (just by guessing), they both have black legs. I also can't find much about my dining table (item #4720-I) - it has an extension, and a planter box in the center of it.

I have lots of questions I'm looking for answers for:
How much are they worth?
How can I best refinish them, if necessary?
Is the upholstery on the armchairs original?
Does anyone have photos to share of how they've decorated with these pieces? I'm a good decorator (by my own fantastic taste standards) but these pieces are extremely challenging in the space I'm using them in (basement of my 1970 beach house). I think the space looks like someone's college apartment (not the look I'm going for in my "very cool" ...my opinion... Bert Tucker beach house).

If any of you are still hanging on after all my blabbing, got any ideas for me?

I have photos. I don't know if I'm technically apt enough to know how to post them to you.

thanks for your time.

Decorating tip #1
Don't clutter up your Nelson pieces with too many accessories/ knickknacks. They are clean, understated designs and look great when you allow the form to be seen.

Photos
have to be hosted somewhere on line. Then all you do is put the links to your images in the "associated web images" boxes below the message box.
You can use a hosting service like photobucket, shutterfly or flikr to store your images.
