hey everyone, been lurking since my last post. Anyhoo, I have an old vintage 7ft aluminum tree. Had it about four years. I have decided to add a color wheel this year. Could anyone provide info on the best brands, brightest, safest, etc? I see them available but don't have a clue as to which brands had the best performance. Thanks!

Jim
A color wheel is a motorized thing with a light bulb and disc of clear plastic divided into several sections, each a different color. You put it under the tree and the disc rotates over the light bulb and the tree turns blue, red, and green in turns. (It's for sparkly silver aluminum trees.)
There's probably at least one forum somewhere on the internet devoted to these, if not more.

I went through the exercise of trying to find one for my aluminum tree a few years back. Working vintage ones that aren't cracked are hard to come by. Amazon sells new ones, but have lousy reviews. I ended up getting a color changing LED bulb and use it in a spotlight I already had. Very cheap on ebay and no mechanical stuff to worry about breaking or catching fire (of course, that might be part of the appeal of a vintage one).

Cloudburst 2000,
Why not try the Ernesto Gismondi, Esperia metamorfosi lamp for Artemide. When Christams is over you may still use this piece in your home.

With aluminum trees, regular string lights cannot be used. It would be a fire and shocking hazard should the lights develop a short (due to aluminum being a conductor of electricity). So color wheels were invented as a way to illuminate the tree.

and how much do those cost? kinda limited on funds at the moment with x-mas presents to buy and the money needed to finish my new aquarium build. The lights alone for the tank are going to run me $1200. Oh the joys of saltwater aquariums LOL

Cloudburst 2000,
Perhaps you should look for the Artemide system for next year. It is more that your aquarium lighting.
While I do not own one (yet) I like the Elos Midi rimless aquarium.

The evergleam tri-lite color rotating wheel/stand is considered the Rolls Royce of color wheels. They regularly sell on ebay for @ $400-$500

haha niceguy, you've got my number. The Elos Midi is in my top three aquariums to purchase but you can't buy just the tank and stand, you have to buy the entire setup that includes elos sump and skimmer. I only want the tank and stand because I already have a sump and skimmer. So I will be getting either the Elos 70 or the Elos Concept80. I can buy those with just tank and stand so better overall value for me plus both are larger then the Midi which means more room for livestock.
