Here in the USA several accredited design schools like RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), Art Center College of Design has a strong Industrial Design Program, Harvard Gtaduate School if you are into Architecture, the list goes on...

If you look back in design history the background of great designers, some never even have a formal academic training, like Marcel Breuer's only training was being a woodworker at the Bauhaus workshop and then becoming the director which led him to practicing architecture. I think the same goes for legendary Andree Putmann who just have a keen eye on good design and decided to pursue a career in interior design after a divorce left her with no source of income.
