Hi.

I'm new to the site.

I recently purchased this quirky sideboard, in the UK. It's not something I would usually buy (i.e teak, danish modern style) but there it was for very little money. I have not seen one like it before, but maybe that's just because it's not what I'd usually look at.

It's rosewood (??) walnut(??) veneer a very blonde wood. It's much heavier than any other sideboard I've ever moved.

The number 15 33 is stamped on the lower edge of one of the side panels

Off the top of my head, I'd guess 1950's German or eastern European. Probably completely wrong.

I'd be interested if anyone here had any thoughts about the origins of this piece or the type of wood/veneer.

My apologies if this is not the place to ask for this style of furniture.

I would say it's wallnut, German from the 1950s

Agree with waldorf, European walnut on the exterior veneer. It looks like the lighter structural wood (legs, drawer sides, etc.) is most likely Beech. The interior is also probably beech, but also might be birch.

The veneer is nice, slip/book-matched. The design/construction is kind of crude, with the piano hinges on the doors, drawers not dove tailed, but the beauty of the veneer does give this piece a certain amount of desirability.

Definitely a beautiful piece, and if you picked it up for cheap, then it was probably a pretty good acquisition!

Are you sure it's real veneer and not laminate? The extreme gloss finish and lack of veneer on the frame is making me less sure of it's quality.

It looks like a Beautility or Reemploy piece.

Thank you waldorf and Zephyr, you've both been really helpful.

I'm quite pleased that I was thinking along the right lines about the German origin, just a lucky guess. I think maybe the solid, sturdy construction and nice materials and yet somehow lacking any subtleties or finer points of design give it a Germanic feel.

I do actually quite like it myself. I'll put it up for sale, see if anyone else agrees enough to buy it ! I hope so, as I need the space.....

Also, I apologise for posting in the wrong section of the forum, I was actually aiming for the identification section, but messed up somewhere and then as a new member I was unable to edit my post.

Hi Kyle, yes it's definitely real wood veneer, albeit under a thick laquer, and quite beautiful too.

Thanks for the Beautility suggestion but I think you are wrong, if only because I generally tend to loathe Beautility sideboards, looking at them makes me feel quite queasy. Stonehill often have the same effect on me.

This one, I quite like.

I think I am wrong too if it's real veneer. It just looks very shiny indeed.

I've been looking on German sites, and I've not found anything at all similar, which I find a bit curious.

An interesting sideboard!

I'd remove the legs and mount it to the wall (lower than the existing height).

probably,

Aunt Mark
