It's not a weird question at all and, for a long-time museum guy like me, it's one that comes up all the time. Safe and efficient storage is a major ongoing concern for any serious collector and every situation is unique, but there are some standards that will benefit anybody.
First and foremost is the need to document, inventory, and catalogue the collection, keep this record up to date and in a separate, safe location.
Custom-fitted boxes (archival quality, of course) on sturdy, open shelving is best. Label and photograph(s) on each to ID contents.
Sturdy closed cabinets, preferably with glass doors, is probably second best for storing unpacked ceramics, though this option relies more heavily on careful handling/placement.
