I have the old one and I have sat on the new one. It is a matter of preference actually. The new one, I believe, is built for taller and/or heavier set customer.
Since I am taller, I actually prefer the new one, if comfort is the goal of owning this piece.
on the older version, my upper neck actually lean on the headrest.
My wife prefers the old one since she is shorter.
The chair comes in two sizes now. Not sure if that was always the case...I think so? But I'm far from an expert on these.
I do know that down loses its loft over time and the only fix is to add more down. Not sure what foam they used but urethane foam also loses resiliency after 10-15 years (sometimes way less). Latex foam will start to turn crunchy-hard with age. You won't ever feel the plywood shell through it, but it can feel like plywood itself when it's really dried out.
From the current HM site:
If you are taller, really love the chair, and happen to be a genius of sorts, you will find a way...

Sit in one of these things long enough and this is the position in which most of us will eventually end up, geniuses or otherwise.
