Hello folks
I have a client who is planning to open an antique store, but an antique store with a difference. She would like to display the objects and furniture within a contemporary environment. To show how the correctly chosen piece can complement any modern lifestyle.
I've been trawling the interweb trying to find examples of how this has been tackled in the past... but with no joy, hence this cry for help. Are there any design addicts out there that know of interesting examples of a mix of contemporary interiors using antique furniture and fittings???
When I talk about 'antiques' I mean predominately pre 1900 european wooden furniture.
Thanks
I'd reccomend getting hold...
I'd reccomend getting hold of interiors books and magazines from the 50s to the 70s. It's very common to see mixes of old (antique) and new (ie mid century) furniture. The use of old pieces used as a foil against modern (e.g. an 19th century longcase clock and a Bertoia bird chair) was a well used trick of interior designers. A couple of books I'd suggest are Design for Modern Living edited by Gerd hatje (1962) and if you can find it, The Modern Interior ed. Robert Harling (1964). Otherwise copies of House & Garden, Homes & Garden etc. These interiors do make a nice change from the 'theme park' MCM so commonly seen today....
the web
You cannot find everything on the web.
I don't have an antique shop but I am interested in antiques and 20thCentury and contemporary design.
Therefor I regularly read interior design magazines and and any book I can find in the library.
(Editions Norma has an interesting series about french interior designers)
I think your client also does this no ?
Otherwise she won't be able the help her customers.
I think I have one example of a mix between contemporary architecture and antiques.
I'll try to post the image asap.
