Yesterday by chance I came across a 'Grand Braderie' a church bazaar in Paris.
After several minutes mooching around I noticed a small rolled up carpet. before unravelling it I asked the price, and was quoted 10 euro/$14. I agreed to take it.
whilst i was there I thought I may as well take a look and the assistant cut the string to open the carpet which turned out to be a tapestry to hang on the wall. suddenly another helper appeared who queried the price, resolving to hold the piece until a better price could be determined. The piece was labelled and signed in an edition of 50 which caught the helpers attention. I was asked to return the next day. In the meantime I was able to research the piece and found one for sale from the same edition in 2009 for 900/1000 Euro. 1stDibs has a slightly larger one from another edition for sale at $38,000. (But that's the world of 1stdibs) Today teh price had risen to 200 euro/$285. I paid. It was a costly lesson to pay on the spot and on a hunch and for the ridiculous pric of 10 euro not to examine the goods in the place of purchase. Neverthe less it was a church bazaar so I imagine the money will go to a good cause and I guess I still got a good deal.
