As Wordworth (or someone) said "tis the conservative who chops the mouldered branch away"...Did anyone see the post about Avant garde design on the Blog? If the ethical thing is to preserve resources is there room for that sort of production? Should there be? Is it time for designers to hae a radical rethink about what they do, why and who for?
Morality in Design
Deutsches Heimatwerk was the Nationalist Socialist (Nazi) response to what it considered to be the degenerate art and design of the Bauhaus. Mies, Gropius et al were all considered as bolshevik. In England, a corresponding design ethic aligned to John Ruskin/ William Morris Arts and Crafts Movement evolved into Gordon Russell utility furniture led wartime Council for Industrial Design which has a similar aesthetic to Deutsches Heimatwerk but for very different reasons, although morality is behind both movements. So in times of austerity and social change it is not unusual for these questions to arise.
