after randomly falling in love with and then buying a vintage cabinet radio from 1962 on ebay last fall, my husband and i have become obsessed with redecorating our apartment circa 1960 style. we're young, we're both artists and we have three small children. so we are what our society considers poor.
lately we've spent many hours browsing the web together drooling over mid century danish pieces. we both knew there was no way we'd be able to buy "real" pieces anytime soon.

today our kids were getting stir crazy and as i was trying to nurse our youngest to sleep, i asked dh to please take the older ones out NOW. i suggested the nearby playground but he decided to head the opposite way towards the woods. we hadn't gone up there in months.

a few minutes later he sends me a picture on my phone. my heart jumps a little as i see some sleek teak curves. can't make out what it is though. think it's a coffee table.
he informs me that it's a chair and that there are cushions too. they are moldy and in a plastic bag. i tell him to bring it all home.

when i look at it in our yard i immediately know that we've found a real treasure! then i see the mark and recognize it as something i've seen before on the very expensive listings on ebay.

he cleans off the mold outside while i do some research. i discover that it is indeed a france & son chair!!! designed by grete jalk.

we are in shock! and in heaven. it's just unbelievable.
last week we got a (not true danish) daybed. a couple days ago we won a table on ebay which is not danish modern, but very much good enough for now.
we still needed a nice chair to go in our living room and would've settled for something german (we're in germany) with what we've dubbed "slanty feet" from the 50s or 60s. NEVER would we have dreamed we'd actually have a france&son chair in our house!

little bummer though... our younger daughter has a tendency to destroy things. she's bright and curious and has to inspect everything thoroughly.
when my husband came inside to get cleaning supplies, i told him to bring the chair in. instead he left it out with the girls. our daughter must've climbed the chair while the cushions were sitting on the floor. a couple of the seat slats broke.

so now we'll have to figure out how to fix that and how to get the chair back into nice shape.
it looks pretty good already after a round of cleaning though. it's goooooooooooooorgeous! we're absolutely head over heals madly in love and forever grateful to the universe for making this happen for us.

does anyone know what year this is from?
what does the serial number mean?(7115463)
got any absolutely awesome must do care instructions?

Not Grete Jalk
Your chair was designed by Arne Vodder for France and Son in the 1950s. It should recline in 3 or more positions. Much better in my opinion than a Grete Jalk chair.
Sweet find!

confusing information
are you sure about that?
i've found info leading me to think it could be either. there seem to be two very similar chairs. so far from what i've gathered, the seat cushions on the vodder version have only two rows of buttons and the frame is held together with screws, where her version has three rows of cuttons and seems to just be held together by tongue and groove or cabinet style?
i'd love to find a really reliable source of information, but i'm still fairly new to the whole subject. got any good links for me?
is there some sort of online catalogue?

Who threw it on the trash pile you ask? My guess is a guy who recently made $80 off of his ESU's?

Armrests-do they match?
or are the left and right armrests on the chair different.Looks like the one closest to the camera is pointier, while the armrest on the far side is rounded on both ends, kind of surfboard like.

Try rubbing alcohol
on the mouldy leather, it often works.
Beautiful chair!

OMG! Leather cushions?-This gets better and better!
Those cushions are amazing, wow, what a chair!Yes,you should dilute alcohol 1:1 with water, lest you dry out the leather.Follow up with thick suds from saddle soap to condition.Allow to air dry.
