lafonda is back
Vitra La Fonda Armchair by Alexander Girard
Lafonda Dating back to 1961, but now available as a reissue, is this Vitra La Fonda Armchair by Alexander Girard.
Girard was a friend of Charles and Ray Eames and was commissioned to create a restaurant interior in the Time-Life Building in New York. To furnish the dining area, he wanted chairs whose bases would fit with the rest of the interior, with the height of the backrests the same as the height of the tables.
And this is the result, developed by Eames Office as a padded plastic shell mounted on a two-piece cast aluminium base. The lining is available in a choice of colours - dark grey, black and orange covered Hopsak. And if you want one to furnish your interior, it retails for £636. that would be around 1250
US dollars
Now find one on ebay for 150 and give me a call and have it recovered for 250.00
lafonda is my favorite,
It is my favorite chair and i think at the end of the day and time they will be the most valuable of all of Eames chairs, cause of the collaboration with Girard , what you should do is find some great fabric that Girard did and have it recovered, or a nice vinyl will be cool also,

It was really a collaboration between the Eames' and Alexander Girard. Girard has the contract for the laFonda restaurant, and Eames actually designed the chairs, with Girard's request for Eames to redesign the shell to not protrude higher than the table...thus the cut down back line of the shell.
I assume that Girard might've had something to do with the base, tho, because it has something in common with the wonderfully graceful Girard furniture made for Braniff and was only in production for a bloody year!
Either way, the laFonda chair is really beautiful.
I paid too much for my beatup example that's being recovered as we speak...with Eames Crosspatch Spring fabric.
