I bought a chair today for $10.00, its a low seated Windsor Ercol, doesn't rock but is in pretty nice shape, original upholstery.
I thought it might have been Wegner in a conventional mood but only found the Ercol sticker when I got it home. Value estimates seem to vary wildly, some 400 pounds others 100 dollars, whats the story?
Should I hang onto it and wait? Or is the Ercol thing just a fad? Its quite well made.
PS If anyone can tell me if the chair in SDR's 'Boomerang' thread came in a dining chair version I would fall over with gratitude.
.
thanks for the quick reply Robert, it has a solid seat, its like this but has a different back cushion with two small leather straps and steel nubbins, the back has plain dowells, the fabric is a dark green wool.
Its growing on me and this photo does it no justice. I think I'll hang onto it, it will take a couple of years for my compatriots to cotton on, right now I think I'd get about $50.00 for it!
Ercol seems to have got a lot...
Ercol seems to have got a lot more popular over the last few years - it always used to be a bit of a poor relation to the 'big' British names but now a few good dealers are carrying it. Makes me wince a bit now to think of the mountains of it I've passed by in the past! I've always felt it had a slight affinity to Heywood Wakefield stuff in the states - well made, plentiful, easy on the eye but never 'Wow look at that!'. I do like the 'pebble' table nests and the lounge chair + ottoman that are in the Austerity to Affluence book.
