The house I live in atm and share with a photographer is owned by an environmental science academic, its full of these energy saving flourescent globes.
Overall its a good thing I'm sure but I've found that they are too large or heavy for anglepoise lamps and give off a really ugly light and are difficult to read or photograph in, seeing as we won't be able to get the old incandescents for much longer I've stashed a few away for the years to come.
I was looking through the Saarinen table lamp thread and wondrered if any designers are trying to work with them.
Whats available in Europe or the US?
n:vision
HP,
I've had a CFL in a table lamp since April of this year. Gets regular daily 5-6 hr use. Made by n:vision and sold in the US by Home Depo. Like GE with thier "Reveal" line of bulbs, some CFL now have similar light grades...like daylight, soft light etc. Try testing some at your local supplier.
don't like 'em
Maybe it's my age (56) but thus far, I don't care for the compact florescent bulbs. Besides, they got Mercury in them and can't be thrown out easily.
I do have some and have tried them in some of my vintage lamps. I prefer the incandescent bumbs in most of my vintage lamops, although i DO have a compact florescent in my big Nelson cigar Bubble Lamp (I have it on a hanging swag and use it with a timer....
yeah I was reading about the...
yeah I was reading about the mercury content earlier, perhaps LEDS?
I'll have to try the daylight versions and see if they are better, its just an awful light, I avoid turning them on as much as possible becuase it feels like I've stepped into a bus station toilet at 2 am whenever I flick the switch.
But I'm very frugal in everything else so I'm not too concerned about the incandescents.
Replicants
Well Barry...you're using the wrong CFL. My CFL emits a light indistinguishable from my 60 Watt General Electric "Reveal" incandescent. Yellowish...but more daylight like.
From what I understand, mercury content isn't that much more than incad. bulbs. Still, you don't want one to break and have a superfund site in your home. LED's are definately going to take over CFLs someday soon.
Like the bus stop analogy! You could redecorate and go for a Blade Runner theme.
Woof Woof
Lol.
I don't particularly like the slow startup for these bulbs (although I do have some in ceilings lights around the house).
In Minneapolis, everyone's raving about how you cannot throw them away like regular bulbs.
Now...where the technology to create a high-end incandescent bulb that lasts a long time and a 40 would give off as much light as a regular 100?
(By the way, I have a friend who has an old Edison Mazda bulb from about 1910 and the darn thing still works! It's only a 14 watt bulb...but they sure made 'em to last....)
If I can get some that have...
If I can get some that have a light indistinguishable from a 75 watt incandescant and are small and light enough to fit in and not make an anglepoise collapse I'll use them, but I'm yet to see anything like that.
It also depends on what the camera sees aswell, I might not be able to tell the difference but it reacts very strangely to different light sources.
light bulb
i have the spirals all over the house
I really don't like them but Al Gore and i try to do our part,
I feel the light is not as bright as it could be
but I moved into this house a year ago and I have a Karl

Hp
why do you leave it on all the time?
good question
I have told many times about this great old modern mansion but the major rooms are on levels and the Den is the farthest away , and to be honest, I don't go in there but once a week , but the House is all celestial windows in a complete box so you can see the Den from one side, the living room from one side, and the stair case from one side, and the court yard in the center, Truly a great design and a true mid century modern House,
If you do not have a light in the Den it is pitch black all the time so we leave a light burning all the time day and night, 24/7 here is pic of the lay out with the windows but this is only two sided instead of 3
Hi LRF,
I noticed that you are still having problems posting images. We have now made it much easier to do it. We have added 3 fields under the name 'associated web images' (see image below). This allows you to post 3 images for each post.
You just need to copy the 'Direct Link' of your image from Photobucket to this field.
Hope this helps.
