made by zenith for eames and then herman miller bought the rights later, but zenith still produced the chair for sometime for miller.
and if the original logo for zenith is not diffrent from the logo when miller took over the production ????? hope im right.....
best to you all......
arnar (skaparinn)
Partially right
You are partially correct Arnar. The lineage of furniture is often confusing because there are designers, manufacturers, and retailers all involved.
The first fiberglas chairs were designed by the Eames, and manufactured by Zenith, to be sold by Herman Miller. Herman Miller always had the rights to the chairs.
The label Zenith used was a smaller square label -often called the checkerboard label because it consisted of four squares alternating white and black. It did, however, always include the red M trademark of Herman Miller.
Herman Miller contracted a number of companies over the years after Zenith to continue production of the chairs in fiberglass, until 1993 when Vitra bought the rights to the chairs and began making them in polypropelene. The chairs are still sold by Herman Miller in the US, and by Vitra in Europe/UK.
As far as I know there is not a complete history of which company produced the chairs after Zenith, altho each company has generally included their motif embossed on the bottom of the fiberglass chairs. On most chairs you will see the familiar HM logo embossed, and then possibly a star inside a crescent, or a flame within a triangle, or two intersecting triangles. Each of the smaller marks references a different manufacturer.
Check out the label on this...
Check out the label on this Eames side shell. That's a first for me.
