Old Eames stuff is pretty hard to come by in Australia, where I live anyway, but yesterday I got 2 tables with the fully cast base, melamine top etc etc for 60 bucks, there are about 7 of them at this shop for the same price but I really don't have the space.

The only trouble is they are powder coated in a pretty awful muddy grey, any tips on removing this and getting the aluminium back to what it should be? Apparantly this stuff works (see link) but am of course open to suggestions, thanks!

Mine are taller and have wheels but cutting them down is not a problem.

The aluminum under the paint won't be polished.
If I were you, I'd call a local metal shop and see what they'd charge to strip and polish the bases; they've got the tools and skill to make the bases mirror-smooth and shiny.
If you can't find a shop that charges what you want to pay, I guess you COULD do it yourself... But you won't enjoy it; search the web for "aluminum polishing tips" to read all about how tedious it is. Here's a page chosen at random:

Thanks, have done some metal ...
Thanks, have done some metal polishing and think I'll do it myself, can throw a polishing wheel on the bench grinder or on the lathe for a bit more room to move.
Its the chemical stripping part I'm not too sure of but will give it a go and see what happens!
