I was surprised to find out in a previous thread that the eames lounge was offered in the 70's with dark oak veneer. I thought that all the sets made between 1956 and 1990 or so were made with brazilian rosewood... What were all the options available for wood veneer during these times. Also, does the brazilian rosewood option was more expensive than the other options, like santos palisander his today?
My 670 is veneered in black "aniline-dyed" ash.
Quotes on "aniline dyed" because it sure looks like paint to me. I believe it was a special order, and one of a pair, from the early '70's and came to me, as the third owner, with its original "camel" skins. Shock mounts were replaced by HM at some point in the late '80's or early '90's and are doing well. The cushions have since been replaced with "chocolate"(?) of similar vintage and I much prefer the look.
I'm not sure what other species were available from HM for custom work at that time.
If anyone has a chart of leather options from the '70's, or can otherwise help me to pin down details of my chair, I'd love to hear from them. I am by no means an expert!
