i found this ottoman at a second hand shop, the veneer is coming off quite badly, is it best to patch up the veneer, or have the whole thing re veneered, also i don't expect it to be an original piece as the veneer would not come off if it was quality, but can anyone tell me how you know if you have an original piece, are there any tell tale signs. thanks for your time.

Judging by the base legs....
That actually looks like the Vitra version.
But the cushion seems overstuffed, so I could be wrong.
Veneer peeling could just be a matter of neglect by the previous owner, as I've come across many legit Herman Miller plywood shells with veneer losses on the edges.

Hume
HumeModern does veneer repair. The tricky thing is that if the veneer is rosewood you're out of luck - there has been an embargo on Brazillian Rosewood (dalbergia nigra) since the late 80s. You could do a complete re-do of the veneer in Santos Palisander which is what Herman Miller uses as rosewood now that the Brazillian stuff is off limits.

restoring ottoman
i think the veneer is walnut, i think i may go with a reveneer in walnut, or a patch job if it is possible i'm in australia so finding the right person to do it may be limited, i think it is worth it though as it is a vitra ottoman i think as suggested by the previous response, the way the cushion attaches to the base matches the original and the leather and filling are of a high quality, it is a dream to sit on.

veneer repair in AU
Any cabinetmaker or decent furniture repair person should be able to replace or patch the veneer. You don't need someone who specializes in modern furniture.

Just to be clear
I didnt say Santos Palisander wasn't available - I said there is an embargo against brazillian rosewood - which is an entirely difference species of wood.
