my view is nothing new
Despite how sick of this topic well seasoned design addicts get, despite that some claim the lounge + ottoman was not a favorite design for Charles, and besides the fact that this design might forever remain a status symbol and a purchase based on popularity ... this chair is popular for a reason.
It's a design with a timeless aesthetic, both neutral and intriguing. I own the chair and I love it. While it's not the most comfortable chair for all (no design could be), fortunately it's perfect for me. If this design really fit your design needs you would have no qualms about the reasons this item is talked about so much.
I personally view this design as the Eames' most successful ... not in terms of sales, but in terms of comfort, aesthetics, and its ability to blend into almost any interior.

like white spike i agree the lounge is not the most comfortable but it sure looks cool to me
I see so may of them in crappy condition and when we restore them they look so good, it truly is a iconic chair. and a must for any collector of mid century modern furniture,

Airport Lounges
Stephen
National Airport in DC, where I live, has the Eames airport lounges. I remember literally looking at the Herman Miller emblem and actually being proud to sit on such fine furniture. As fucked as that sounds. I was really excited.
So, I think Demetrios is right on!

Las Vegas
My first time in Las Vegas I sat in the Eames airport seating and I though I was "The Man". I even have pictures of me sitting on it and kneeling down to look for the HM emblem. Econo is not alone!

porch lounges
Eames Demetrios was telling me that he has a set of the airport lounges on his porch. He has invited me to his home near pacific Pallisades to have a drink. Can't wait!

At 5'9", my Eames Lounge is perfect for me. My wife, at 5'4" loves it too. I love the design and agree that it has the uncanny ability to blend into almost any environment.
My wife and I were perusing an issue of DWELL and she spotted an ad with a painfully hip looking woman wearing Jackie O sunglasses sitting on a swank Italian circular sofa group with shelving along the backside of the group. The apartment was a NYC loft with high ceilings, lots of light, and hardwood floors. She looked at me and said, "This is nice, but the problem is that I'd feel like I have to always look like *her* to fit in to that decor. I wouldn't feel right about slumming in a place like this". I laughed, but I could see her point...sometimes things can be too much.
Last Friday, I sat in the Eames Tandem Sling seating at LAX...those are very cool and surprisingly comfortable. I had never really noticed them when I traveled all the time.

Do you remember if the circular sofa shelving have Jonathan Adler pottery?
