I've spotted this LCW for sale recently. It's aniline red rather than the newer painted ones. Condition looks excellent.

Does anyone know when the aniline ones went out of production? I'm trying to date this thing and from the condition, I'm guessing it's a newer production.

Any advice would be appreciated!

"Newer", as a relative term, to me means any of these produced since 1980 (of which the chair in your photos is an obvious example).

Maybe part of the confusion has to do with the "aniline" descriptor of the red colorant/coating. AFAIK, the finishing process, proprietary to HM of course, has and continues to evolve as new formulas are introduced. Red editions have similarly come and gone periodically based on marketing and demand.

It's been at least a decade since I last inquired of HM as to vintage of one of their Eames pieces, but, as I recall, their online customer service was responsive and helpful.

Best of luck. Very professional looking pics, BTW.

I think that's the newest design label that exists

Appears possibly birch veneer, too, if that helps.

Thanks very much for the information. I didn't realise the "aniline" variants were in production still in the 80s.

I've only seen the painted red ones until recently when I saw one of this type in a store and loved how it shows the beauty of the wood grain through.

Thanks again for the advice.

http://www.eamesoffice.com/the-work/lcw/

Unlike the metal base versions which is in continuous production since 1946, the LCW was short lived & discontinued in 1953 (1946-1953) and reintroduced/reissued along with other discontinued HM products in Herman Miller for the Home in 1994 making the early LCW highly coveted by serious collectors particularly the pre HM Evans Plywood examples.

The Eames Office Foundation and the Herman Miller sites are must have/go to resource for anything Eames.
