"in black it finds its strongest expression"
ahem ... in your opinion. And sometimes an object doesn't need to be "strong." Some prefer subtlety.
And some people find no problem with an array of different materials being apparent. Isn't being honest and true to form a modernist principle?
And, true, white is more "mod." But why make your selection based on what you are trying not to be? Seems silly. I would pick based on the overall aesthetic you're shooting for. White was around long before the mods.... The greeks loved it.
I see them as equals.

Greeks did like white, but they LOVED color. Those marble statues...many were originally painted in a festival of colors.

Fine. See if they'll make you an elliptical in rainbow stripes, then.

Lol, ohh, Jeremiah
where are you? Seriously, Whitespike, a huge expanse of white table floating over a white rug? I think it would make the rug look dirty/dingy because there is no way you are ever going to keep a rug as clean as you can keep a new Eames table.
Although, Stephen, being such a smart and savvy guy, would probably not have a white rug with a toddler. What's the finish on your floor under the proposed table Stephen? Light or dark?

Well, I don't know that I would do a white rug (for the same reasons you state) .... but the idea of a white table on another white surface is just as viable an option as another with more contrast...

If you have a toddler, then
probably a white rug is not a super smart idea.
