Hi all -

When shopping fiberglass shell chairs, I noticed the Herman Miller fiberglass dowel legs chairs seem to have wider legs than the Modernica chairs (see pictures). Does anyone know more about this? Are the legs on the Modernica and Herman Miller chairs actually different? If so, are the Modernica legs narrower than "normal"?

Thanks

I think I remember reading somewhere that when HM reintroduced the "dowel" bases, they widened the stance to make them more stable in use. In this particular detail, the Modernica version may be more accurate to the original base design which, as I understand, was only offered for a very short period (1951-'53?) due to durability issues ...which would explain why early, all-original DAWs (Dining Armchair Wood) are so rare. Nearly all older-edition DAWs listed for sale have reproduction bases on them, so caveat emptor!
