I recently found a company that has overstock on 2007 and 2008 Eames 670/671 that they are selling for nice deal
theres a few options
Black Leather with natural cherry....the favorite so far
black leather with (reg.) cherry
Sable leather with cherry (dark brown)
Ivory leather with walnut (white)
or Marmor leather with cherry (off white) looks real nice red and white tones
Unfortunately they don't have any of the santos palisander on sale, but i think that is shell is a little over rated, if you want the look get the Rosewood...
just my opinion
I need help on the decision
All
All the leather looks like crap when you first get it. Mine (Leather 8 I believe) looked like charcoal grey cardboard. Felt fairly similar too. Not it is getting a deeper color in the worn in areas, and getting a pretty nice shine to it as well.
As for the veneer, the cherry is just boring. Like buying a Ferrari and painting it beige. The chair is good for a nap, but the veneer shouldnt put you to sleep.
The beauty of the chair has always been in the contrast of its volumes and materials: hard shells, soft leather, the uniform mass of the cushion against the riot of the rosewood veneer. In the 90s when the rosewood was discontinued they brought in walnut as an (albeit less riotous) substitute. The cherry, I'm sure, was offered as a concession to the odd breed of folks who equate cherry with quality. It's not a bad wood, just...boring (imho).
I agree with message above
the CHERRY does suck, but Natural Cherry, is alot nicer, its like a lighter tone of the walnut and has all the grains visible, im just tired of seeing it in walnut, and my last 670 was a walnut, so i figured id go for natural cherry...so i did.
cant wait, it will be here in a few days!
Regular cherry has no grains, its almost orange looking in the sunlight (ugly) and if it ever CHIPS you can notice it from a mile away.
the only time it looks nice, is if its a cherry with decent grain and ivory leather,
the red and white contrast is unique looking.
I just saw a pic of my chair being shipped...
its really nice, the light natual cherry looks so close to the walnut, with a nice warm feel and some good grains in the wood, it looks Nothing like the Cherry regular!
Good for the modernist, wood look.
plus its the less chosen wood when an eames lounge is purchased.
its either walnut, cherry, or santos, that i always see.
Hindsight..
So..I guess mine must be the dreaded dark cherry? I've never been crazy about my leather choice (sable), as it seems to blend into the dreaded cherry far too much..and quite frankly looks rather dead. I most definitely should have ordered it in walnut/natural. At the time I felt it best to try to blend in with the FK credenza. Now...I hope that the goddamn image appears so that I can edit this part of my message.
Highball wishes to all!
Mark.
Don't be silly Lunchbox!
However, I've decided to temporarily leave the brown cow spun facing towards the corner(as in time-out time)...and fantasize about replacing the visually overseen, owner underused hunk- o -cherry and hide with something sweet.
ps. the way you slap at old Whitespike makes me laugh.
