Forgive me if I am late to the party as I am sure this must have been posted on here before.
An interesting little documentary filmed in 1960. There is footage inside the France & Son factory as well as Fritz Hansen, Johannes Hansen and others.
@mcm-interiors Nothing to forgive here, even if somebody has seen this already. This film can be watched at the Design museum Denmark. It shows rare footage of Kaare Klint, Peder Moos, Johannes Hansen's workshop and Ludvig Pontoppidan himself, who can be seen making a chair in a pretty long scene. This is absolute gold.
"People buy a chair, and they don't really care who designed it." (Arne Jacobsen)
I remember seeing this last summer when we were at the Designmuseum Danmark, but nice to have a handy link to refer to it on demand. A couple of items I noted:
- The initial scene with the shipping crate seems to indicate this video was specifically made for The Arts of Denmark: Viking to Modern exhibition that toured the US in 1960-1, and was curated by Finn Juhl. I imagine this was played in a loop somewhere in the exhibition, the same way it is done today in the Designmuseum Danmark. I bought the accompanying book a few years ago. The video shows the photographing of the 45 Chair image in the book.
- The "block" finger joint was still being used in the hidden backrest section under caning for the JH-501 Round Chair, even though the sawtooth finger joint for the exposed backrest had been in use for a while.
