new ad from Alessi for the pots & pans designed by jasper morrison. kind of ironic and at the same time sad slogan; 'cooks as good as it looks' okay it is a rhyme but thus this not really make sense to the point that most of the 'designstuff' is nice to look at but not practical in use and therefore they have to use this kinds of slogans.

Let me start with admiting that I am guilty of using a similar slogan: "design that works".
There is more than just ambiguity in a statement like this. First of all it is based on the assumption that "designed" is a quality rather than the statement of the simple fact that it did not happen by accident. But I have to agree that the word "design" has this positiv conotation. In functionalist terms it makes sense because the shape should be a result of the function and by looking at a well shape object one could conclude that it works as well as it looks. Even that paradigm has been shaken considerably over the years so I guess that what Alessi really means is to link the image of their cookware with : Looks good! cooks good!
By the way www.cookware.com continues to rate the product of your own Belgian cookware manufacturer: Demeyere as the best on the market.

i know Demeyere is very good (i got some of their apollo pans!). like you say it; looks good! cooks good! this is quite neutral and lays the emphasis both on the functional as visual aspect. but alessi's slogan is "cooks as good as it looks". like by looking at it you would think "nice design but does it work?" and therefor they need to say to customers; it also cooks very well! and i must say although demeyere is just 'demeyere' and not alessi their pans are also nice looking! i wonder who designed them

i must say this one of the greatest battles i have in life when i tell people i am a designer; they al expect that i am living in a cold minimalistic black/stainless steel interior and that all of my furniture is 'goodlooking' but not practical to sit on. same for the products i design, without seeing them people think that i design products that have a special form but are not handy to produce or use. it is the stigma of 'design' i presume. but hey it is still a nice job to lighten up peoples life!
