how to display many clocks???
I have currently 54 vintage Nelson clocks displayed in my home, and about 3 or 4 reproductions, plus 5 Frederic Weinberg clocks, and a couple of Howard Miller ceramic clocks and a few more misc. clocks. I still have about 7 more vintage Nelson clocks that I wish I could figure out where to hang. It becomes harder and harder to arrange them and still make them present nicely. I don't mind looking like a museum but I don't want to look like a clock shop either. Along with the clocks I also try to display some artwork (mostly Weinberg sculptures) here and there. You can go to my (unfinished) webpage: www.geocities.com/kenshotus/ and see how some are arranged. I am constantly rearranging and trying new ideas.
I know a few other GN clock collectors and have seen how they arrange theirs. One much used motif is to arrange a vertical line on a high wall. That usually looks good. I have also seen arranging them up high in a horizontal line, along the ceiling, making them a border or capital motif in the room. I made a huge board with a checkerboard pattern, using the colors in my house, and hung it on the wall and placed clocks in alternating squares. I was fairly pleased with that out come.
I have a friend with over 100 vintage Nelson clocks. His home has a two story wall at the entrance with a stairway across from it. That works great for him since you can climb the stairs to the balcony and view the clocks at different levels.
A few of my clocks are running with the correct time. Most are not and have their cords removed or hidden so they display better. I have many repeats of some clocks. For example, it took me years to obtain all 9 variations of the Ball clock, and there are a few others that I am working on getting all the different color variations of.
When you are that committed to a collection (of anything) it can become a real challenge to come up with good ways of displaying. I am always glad to see how others display their collections, some people have some great ideas. I don't see my collecting as an addiction (OK, well maybe sometimes), but instead, as a source of great enjoyment for me.
