Could be a funny idea to produce in molded ply in hi end wood finishes? I know, funny is not usually a good indicator of good design ...

There's probably nothing...
There's probably nothing that hasn't been done with the "monobloc" concept-wise as it is such an instantly recognisable, cross-cultural icon.
Jens Thiel has set up an entire site devoted to it - functionalfate.org. It's fun to browse and as almost any aspect covered; from art and design projects to hacks and pictures from around the globe...

What
What makes me the most sad about mono-block chairs is that they are the ideal that Charles & Ray Eames searched for with the shell chairs: an inexpensive, single material, comfortable (tho this is debatable) chair. That is on every front porch from Provincetown to San Francisco...
