When they were new
When evaluating a work of art from the past, I keep in mind that I'm usually looking at something that's been imitated countless times, and those imitations are a kind of filter through which I may be seeing the piece.
These chairs must have been mind-blowing when original. I have the sense that I've seen them before. What I've seen is cheap knock-offs. I have to look more closely at these, appreciate the context, and in that I find them quite beautiful. Groundbreaking. I wouldn't want them in my home, but they're undeniably amazing for their time.
I wish I could see things without this filter. I wish I could hear 'Revolution' and never think of Nike. I wish I could see a van Gogh and have it strike me as completely fresh, new and shocking as his works must have struck people in the 19th Century. These things are still amazingly beautiful to me, but I hear and see them through this damned filter.

I hear Brent, it can be painful. Not so much for furniture because thats allways fresh for me but in the last couple of years I've done a bit of video editing work and cgi and read up on special effects and now I just can't switch off in the cinema and enjoy what I'm watching.
I'm looking at stapler and pair of scissors right now and trying look at them in the abstract, just as forms, the way most people would look at arabic text. Its interesting.
