nice going in many respects!
you mentioned it being on the heavy side. what about fashioning the basic shape out of rigid high-density foam [styro], possibly reinforced with some type of fiberglass material? [of course, this grand suggestion is coming from a graphic designer, so keep the salt handy!] then again, the extra heft may just contribute to its overall stability.
anyway, thanks for the show-and-tell. i enjoy seeing what people are doing with their creativity and industry.
