Hi all
Just picked this table at at an auction for a super price.
Now it is a bit rough and I am curious what i should do.
There is a rough patch on the surface. I would like to smooth this out a bit but do not want to do a full on refinish
Second the caning is very rough. I think having it repaired would exceed the value of the table.
My questions is, should I remove it? Is original ugly broken cane better then no cane?

I would definitely re-cane. ...
I would definitely re-cane. You can do it yourself. You should find this thread incredibly helpful.

Don't be lazy
Re-cane and repair the finish... you can do it!

I just had the exact same table re-caned
Looked wonderful and only cost me £50 to have it professionally done. Do it, it'll transform the table. Polish the brass fixings too.

That's one of the easiest
cane patterns to do. But that said, don't attempt it yourself unless you like a challenge and enjoy working with your hands. It shouldn't be too pricey to have a pro do it.
(and no, broken and dirty cane does NOT make the table more valuable. Perish the thought! It just makes it less useable. And less beautiful.)
