I have an Yrjö Kukkapuro Karuselli chair that is totally functional and structurally sound, but the white fiberglass shell is aged to a depressing, unattractive yellowed white. The red leather has disintegrated on the arms, seat and head-rest. The original leather is so specifically shaped and fused to foam which is fused to the shell. It would be so costly to re-upholster, that one might as well buy it new. So...I almost put it on Craigslist for free, but I couldn't do it. It is dear to me -- had it 25 years now.
So...I ask...is it possible to recolor the fiberglass to become a black fiberglass shell? I would think that somebody hear has probably tried this with eames and saarinen chairs. Somebody told me that boats and cars are sometimes refinished & recolored fiberglass. Does anyone have any tips about this process and...might anyone know of someone that does it? (I am in southern california)
I was thinking I could use some kind of grey yak fur / flokati seat cover to cover up the disintegrated leather. Any thumbs up for such a wabi-sabi approach to saving a dear friend of a chair?
Thanks!
Rod
(The chair was designed with white or black shell, see images. I want to turn my white chair black.)
Painting fibreglass is not...
Painting fibreglass is not unlike painting your car, there really are no differences except that fibreglass is easier to repair should you have any marks or defects.
Try a fine cutting compound first, the same as you would for your car. If that doesn't work try your local spray painters but one that cares as much about your chair as you obviously do.
