I picked up four Thonet Brno ...
I picked up four Thonet Brno chairs last night at an auction. I was not planning on bidding on them, as the upholstery, foam, and chrome were not in good shape. But as I was waiting to check out, the lot came up and no one else wanted them, so I was able to take the whole lot for a low price.
I've had a tough time subsequently trying to find info on the Thonet Brno. Do these chairs fall under the unlicensed vintage category? While there are some rust areas on the chrome, the flat bar frame is still solid.
Are Thonet Brnos worth the effort to restore?
edit: Also, does anyone know the dates that Thonet made the Brno chair? Thanks.
Definitely chrome. In...
Definitely chrome. In addition to extended armrests, there are quite a few other differences to the authorized Knoll version (three of which I coincidentally have in my office), including: recessed allen head socket screws for frame connection vs welded, flat ends to sled vs. curved, an exposed front rail under the seat.
I am guessing that all of these modifications (and certainly others I haven't yet noticed), allowed Thonet to avoid copyright infringement. The question for me is how respectable are these vintage Thonets perceived these days; enough to make restoration worthwhile? I am personally interested in restoration of wood furniture more than steel, so I would look to pass these off to someone else. There do not appear to be many Thonet flat bar versions advertised out there.
Ironically on a separate note, the poor quality iPhone photos make the chairs appear to be in better shape than they are. Reupholstering is a must and chrome finish must be addressed somehow as well.
