Just an observation. My eyes are tired of guessing.

Perhaps we should give in and know that this is a service we provide...

I'm happy to be a non-expert when it comes to which chair or what shock mount, keeps me from having to feel guilty about not replying.

I often think that a blog or ApartmentTherapy or one of the
scrapbooker forums has posted to ask over here.
And the obsession is value. Often seems impatient.
And without a simple search. Oh well.

Agreed. It does often have an urgent vibe to it doesn't it?

I have a piece of swollen chipboard with a microns thickness of teak stuck on it, I think its Kaare Klint but I'm drunk and desperate, thanks!
Sorry, that is mean spirited but it would be nice if there was some background, or a follow up and thankyou more often.

It's pretty dire, honestly...
I miss discussions about design.
Those were fun.

"Doctor, it hurts when I push on my eyes."
I haven't visited here for over a year and "you guys" are still going on about the i.d. and repair posts. Either organize an all-out campaign to segregate them or click back out of those that aren't announced up front.
I get prospective customers who drop out right in the middle of negotiations without a word, all-the-freakin'-time. That's the reality of online communications. It bugs me also.

Like I've said earlier, I...
Like I've said earlier, I think this forum would benefit from being separated into different categories and being moderated, etc.
This way, you could for example set up simple rules like; no ID-questions until you have posted at least 5 posts in other discussions: include location and picture if you want an answer, etc.
I know this is a free service and I'm thankful for it, so please to bash me for being 'mean' to Patrick and Alix and complaining about the site.
Just tired of wading through all the junk threads, to find the few interesting ones.
/Alex

Good
Constructive... I would avoid the 5 posts rule though, it would mean a lot of junk answers. A separate place for i.d. etc. would allow newbies to get an idea of how to research and simply to join the club.

Separate place
Yes a separate place would be good. I personally don't mind the ID threads apart from when it is obvious that the person hasn't even made an effort to find out what it could be. I'm happy to share my knowledge most of the time as long as it is appreciated, it takes a long time and the investment in books isn't cheap. There doesn't seem to be any other forums that have contributors with such a wealth of twentieth century design knowledge and I think people are generally very generous with it.
I don't contribute much to the other threads but do still read pretty much all of them

I used to enjoy this forum...
I used to enjoy this forum and contribute quite frequently - I just can't be bothered now as its predominantly id requests from people too lazy / arrogant / stupid to do a few minutes research of their own. I now only look here for Mahogany Association numbers

I like the ones that post an ID and then on the same day post "hello? any idea thought this was a forum for experts...." or something similar. I dont mind IDing for the sake of knowledge but its the dealers who post regular ID requests that annoy me,makes me think they are in the wrong profession.

Hello everybody
We understand your frustration. We also deplore the exponential growth of these ID threads. As some of you have already mentioned in previous discussions, these threads can be interesting and can make us discover new objects. Therefore the point is not to eliminate them but to contain them so that they don't take up the whole space of the forum.
The division of the forum in different categories seems to be probably the best solution.
What could these categories be according to you?
-General design discussions
-Architecture and interior design
-Identifications
-Restoration
Other ideas?
It is a bit early to make some promises but we hope to soon be able to change the structure of the forum and to apply major improvements to the whole site. However, it is a huge work that will take a lot of time. We hope that we can end it for 2011.
In the meanwhile, we will all have to be patient. If you have suggestions for transitional solutions that dont need web development, they are of course welcome.

Thanks to Whitespike for prompting this. I'd be a bit concerned that breaking it up too much might dilute the forum into something that is a bit arid, personally I'd favour just one separate channel for ID threads and group everything else together.
One thing I would like but which is probably too difficult would be the ability to contact other posters privately or off site, perhaps profiles? I would gladly pay an annual fee if there could be a members section.
