just curious, thoughts?

for me in particular- i'm a practicing interior designer with interests in marketing, urban planning, art, architecture, graphic and industrial design. i tend to shy away from traditional and staid, preferring cutting edge and modern instead. i speak english and am rusty in spanish.

I would say a good place to practice your trade is in any large metropolitan area with a forward thinking, well-paid workforce that can and will utilize your talents. Richard Florida wrote an excellent book entitled "Rise of the Creative Class" that addresses some of these very issues. While it can be rather dry in places and at times comes across as a very "scholarly and clinical" piece of work it gives good indications of things to look for in a community. A more liberal and progressive mindset within a community goes a long way. These of course are some broad based stereotypes, but perhaps a departure point. Where are you currently based?

i know florida's book very well, but maybe i should revisit it. does he give specific cities?
i live in philadelphia, which i love for many reasons. however, the design market is fairly unmotivated.

KD592 we were actually
thinking of moving to Philly, but haven't done enough research yet. The unmotivated part isn't too encouraging though. It has been some time actually since I've read Florida's book and I don't recall that he actually spells out actual locations except in the most broadest sense. As I recall he rather sketches out certain criteria that gives a particular area a "future", further research is probably required as to whether a particular city has or has not those criteria.
Yes Barcelona is a great city but for those of us who might make such a move from the US, we would take such a beating on the conversion from the dollar to the Euro that it would amount to financial suicide.

I live and work
I live and work in Cambridge, MA. It is an amazing city, with some world class design firms, architects, and generally interesting people. You can't walk around town without (litterally) tripping over Harvard and MIT post docs.

The Boston area is also on our list
anything to get out of Southwest Florida. Philly we have heard, has one of the worst airports, but it may be hearsay. A good airport is important to be certain. Logan has been quite effiecent the times we have flown through, but perhaps we just got lucky, tough to tell based on 7 or 8 times in or out of it.
We've looked in Cambridge, Somerville, Allston, JP and of course Boston proper.
