I am ridding of my Modernica eiffel bases from my side shells. The way the feet are attached there is a cap on the top of the foot that is rather painful when you accidentally step on it. If I had it to do again, I would have left the original bases, as I am not such a big fan of repro stuff these days. Now either way I go, they will be unoriginal, so I feel like I could buy whatever for them.

My first choice might be the dowel base. Second would be vintage X bases, and third vintage black H bases.

I have noticed that different bases make the chair sit differently. I have noticed that the H is more comfortable than the eiffel, which seems a little too upright. Has anyone else noticed this, and if so, how does the dowel compare?

eames shell bases
I haven't noticed any difference between any of the seating heights of any of the different bases I have - eiffel/ h-base/ x-base nor that of the one modernica eiffel repro I also own. There were 2 heights made in H and X bases, dining and lounge height. I have the h-base in lounge height and it sits much lower, almost, but not quite as low as the cats cradle base.

It doesn't have to do with height - it just sits differently. My eiffel bases seem more upright.

I had an armshell on a repro dowel base recently and found it quite comfy, much like a h-base. How's an eiffel (don't have) compared to a la fonda? I find these very "upright".

I figure if I am going to buy a repro base I might as well save some $$$ so long as it looks right. Do the wires on these look thicker? They seem to look right....

Depury
Depury used to live in Cambridge near me and I've bought 2-3 different pieces from him. His stuff is good. I love all of the bases, but I think a whole table full of the eiffels or of the dowels gets rather busy and self aware. Both, IMO, look better paired or single.
I have the black vintage H bases around my kitchen table and like them. The H bases are clean, simple, and cheap if you find someone getting rid of a bunch. I bought from craigslist where a guy was moving and needed to get rid of a bunch of chairs fast. My plan had been to put Eiffels on eventually, but when I put them on Hs around the table I found I really enjoyed the look.
The linked picture (couldnt embed it) looks almost exactly what my table & chairs look like, except my table's a bit bigger and the chairs are different colors.

I agree. I almost did a dining set of eiffels once. But it was too busy to me, espeically in a small space.
This is just for a pair of side chairs - not a dining set.

Still considering black Hs or Xs. Something very nice about the basics sometimes. If I went that route they would be vintage. Would X bases be appropriate for early 60s shells?

I have H-bases!
Hi Whitespike. Hey I've got 30 h-bases in my garage atthe moment. The fellow who bought all my shell chairs didn't wantthe bases. They are silver, but you could easily have them sprayed in an automotive shop. You want a few? I hate thinking I'm going to have to scrap them. Email me directly at oliveschairs@gmail.com

hate to say they are the bottom of the food chain for Eames shells.. they are so commercial looking and just don't have the sex appeal of the other designs Eames did.
