I just bought a flat bar Brno chair which I'm a bit lost on. It was second hand from an office furniture place and I didn't have time to look for a knoll stamp ( I don't what what it looks like) but it looks absolutely identical to a Knoll chair on Graham Manchas site.
Are any European manufacturers making the chair? It looks like chrome but I was in a hurry and can't be sure.
Any authentication tips?
buying brno
Brno is the one chair other than Barcelona's that you can buy a non Knoll and be very happy with I have lots of Brnos 4 knoll from the 1970's 4 from the 90's not knoll , you can not tell them apart unless you do the magnet test to see which is stainless steel or chrome
.One thing you do need to be on the look out is if you do get a reproduction and want to match it to a knoll make sure that it is the same high the knolls measure up to be 30 inch from the ground while some repos are 32 inchs . It can be difficult if they do no match up as i made that mistake having 4 knolls buying 4 extra for a dinning table and they are 2 inches taller.. learn and live at least you won't make the same mistake I did .... I even had them recovered and set them at the table to see that they were different heights .
but I used the larger ones as Capitan's chairs and the other two against a wall so alls well and now only you and the design addict community know . but just be aware , Knolls have paper stickers on the bottom ,
Knoll Brno
The bottom line is virtually none of the knock-offs use stainless steel, too difficult to form and finish well. Knoll sells the chair in chromed steel or the much more expensive stainless. If it's stainless it's almosty certainly knoll. I have six Knoll chairs from before 1972 and none have a knoll stamp. Get a magnet. If it sticks stongly it's chromed steel, skip it unless it's dirt cheap. If the magnet drops off it's stainless and worth keeping/recovering as needed, That frame will survive the next 2 or 3 global armageddeons.... chromed steel will eventually scratch chip and peel then rust.
Thanks James, I'm itching to...
Thanks James, I'm itching to grab a magnet and check it out, it was only $40 US so I've bought it anyway. As LRF says the copies are good, and this one is excellent.
I'd never buy a copy new but at least buying this one supports a small local business (thats my justifications anyway)
I must have a rosewood desk immediately!

You did good for 40 bucks , I have never seen a flat bar for that price at the raunchiest
vintage stores . They cost around 125.00 and up and then you are getting a deal cause you have to have it recovered Regardless if it passes or fails the magnet test you got a great chair and a great deal We call it the deal of the day or week.
Enjoy it .
no no, I put a deposit down...
no no, I put a deposit down on it yesterday and have the reciept. The psychology of buying vintage stuff can be a minefield, was I too excited? How much does he really know? etc etc. I live in a wealthy rural centre in Southeast Queensland, amazing stuff turns up here.

where is Queensland ? hit my website www.retroredo.com there are just a few of the 65 vintage chairs that i own if you want to read the story go www.tulsapeople-digital.com/tulsapeople/200707/ then hit contents and it is on page 104 Nothing like scoring a great chair or vintage midcentury modern piece they are not making the originals any more that is what i like to own and redo it is a great feeling putting a old piece of junk back in tip top shape.
