Rich
Sonny, the bid's at 3300 US. Are you crazy? That pays one half of one semester of college tuition for one of my kids at Clemson. Too rich for my blood.
Great chairs, tho.

my guess
looks like a modified nelson design... swag leg seat and base but with more of an office-chair type of back.
on a side note, there was a recent listing (330247148691) of a task chair with a padded and uphostered plastic DCM back and seat... i hadn't seen one before, but i'm sure it's not exactly rare.

George Nelson for Herman Miller, 1958. MAA chair. Completely original.

MAA
thanks for the info norm. i did not mean to suggest that the chair was not an original nelson, just that it looked like an extension of the more well-known DAF design. 🙂

A beautiful but flawed design.....
leading Herman Miller to withdraw it from production only after a year.
From DesignMatcher.com:
"Incidentally, this chair was only produced for one year before it was withdrawn, owing to an inherent design flaw. The rubber sockets, which are welded to the back of the chair and connect with a system of pivoting ball pins allowing the back section to articulate through 90 degrees, degrade under stress. Once the critical ball-and-socket joint is weakened, the back disconnects from the rest of the chair. Despite this, the concept of an independently articulating molded-plastic back element was exceptionally innovative for the time."
The 2-tones are the most valuable, see link below:

Very collectible-Like the Edsel ,which was an ititial failure.
That's what happens.Anything ,especially a fairly well made item which was initially not a great seller eventually becomes a hot collectible. So sad.
