Chair
Its hard to say but the arms would suggest it is a little older georgian or victorian maybe. This style has been reproduced alot, but there should be signs of age in its construction.
Try an antiques forum someone will probably clear it up straight away.

Sure, I'd believe oak, SDR.
Especially since it's likely 19th C English country Chippendale. It's impossible to tell species from the pic, but English oak darkens much more than our N. American varieties will and an old asphaltum stain/varnish will, as well.

Thanks.
I haven't beheld a piece of English oak; the wood seems to have a grain as fine as that of, say, walnut.
The faired-in base of the back splat is a nice detail, and the evident asymmetry of the two ends of the crest rail bespeaks antiquity, doesn't it . . .

There's much to identify the chair as
a country piece made in the popular form, but simply and unadorned by details that would be found on more refined work such as a carved crest rail, pierced splat, etc.
Of course, I really can't be sure about the species without actual inspection, but oak certainly fits, with imported species like mahogany being reserved for higher-end work.
