I am moving to a new city very soon, and I will need to make the most of my space. It's a little frightening because I plan on trying my hand at survival as a freelance designer.

In order to save as much cash as possible during my "test-drive" time I will end up getting a one bedroom apartment. I need my bedroom to double as an office, so I need advice on maximizing my space affordably.

Being the packrat that I am, I have acquired quite a bit of good vintage pieces that I am not willing to part with, save for just a few items. Since my sofa is one of those items I need to make a bedroom/office space. I need to either get a sofabed, futon, or wallbed. On any of these items I would like to spend (I know, I know, asking too much) around 500-700.

A while back I saw a cool, simple murphy bed that was $400 delivered in a Dwell article. Unfortunately this company's website exists no longer. I also like the twilight sofa at DWR, but I don't know if I am willing to spend that much just yet. I have also seen some decent looking futons ny Innovation ans other similar companies, although you have to pick wisely. Some are unbearably ugly.

So, know that this is what I will be sleeping on every night. Should I avoid sofa beds or futons for comfort's sake? Has anyone had experiece with any of these options that will maximize space, affordability, and comfort?

i despise sleeping on futons
if you have shoulders or hips at all a futon is not the right thing for you (well... you may be 19 years old, so it might be ok for you for a year or two when it is all compressed and hard as a rock)
In my opinion a futon will always look and feel like a futon. You are better off getting a daybed of some kind.
With your budget, however, i don't know how much luck you will have finding something appropriate and comfortable, I can't think of anything I would recommend at that price.
Good Luck.

haha
I thought so - it was worth asking. If anyone else has a lead let me know. I am especially interested in the wall bed solution if anyone has a good resource. I haven't ever used a futon, but have always heard bad things. It might be ok for an overnight guest - but this will be my bed....
Also - I may just go ahead and get the Twilight sofa from DWR. I can afford it (it's around $1500) but I am just being extra frugle given the situation. In the long run, properly designing a room to be multipurpose will be cheaper than getting a 2 bedroom place.
Has anyone used the Twilight sofa for sleep?
Any other suggestions? I would prefer to have a solution that utilizes a full size bed rather than a single daybed.
I have several things to get, including shelving and desks, but I understand the bed situation is probably not where I want to cut corners.

Mitchell Gold
I had a Mitchell Gold sofa bed - "Luc" sofa in fabric.
My guests said it was the most comfortable sofa bed they had ever slept in. I slept in it myself and thought it was quite comfortable.
You can purchase Mitchell Gold through Crate and Barrel and, I believe, Room and Board.
The disadvantage with the sofa bed, though, that it was ridiculously heavy.

the Annex is expensive a bit of an oddball look.
don't know if this would work for you. it is an oddball look i like it in certain rooms. it is very comfy to sleep on(ummm not cheap either) and it is a full queen size too. We use it in spare room/offices mostly, and in a lot of basements.

A "freelance designer" should be able to design a simple platform upon which upholstered cushions can be set.

There are things much more than murphy beds to get complete comfort and sleep in sofa bed but that should be of a little bit large in size and obviously expensive.
