lately I've used a acrylic-based varnish on some furniture and was pleased with the fast-drying, clean result.
This type of varnish should remain colourless as opposed to solvent based types, wich become milky or yellow.
Does any of you have further experience in this matter? What does the surface or medium do on the long term? I've experienced it to be best used on lighter wood surfaces.
For a "water-white" clear finish, they are unsurpassed.
Water-borne acrylic coatings for wood have come a long way since first introduced, and if that's the look you want, they're certainly the way to go. They do, however, often present compatibility issues when applied over previously finished surfaces, so I would be hesitant to use them on anything I wasn't sure of. The biggest limitation of water-based acrylic "varnishes", IMO, is that they do nothing to enhance the depth and reflectivity (chatoyancy) of fine-quality furniture woods and often look somewhat drab compared to oil-based finishes to me.
