It's difficult to commit oneself to a favorite one because there are a lot of beautiful chairs but if I would be pressured to make a choice I would choose the Thonet S 64 by Breuer, pure and classic lines, furthermore absolutely comfortable.

this is for sale locally, at the moment:
a design by Arne Hovmand Olsen for Mogens Kold.
I like it a lot...Auction is tomorrow... Have to many chairs as it is... Don't know what to do...sigh.

Buy it bj!
That is an exceptional chair. I have one and love it.
It's really not exactly a dining chair, though you could use it at a table or desk. It's more like an occasional chair. with an intermediate seat height.
You really want to have it out in an open space, though. It's so beautiful from every angle.

Robert, thanks for the picture of the Ercol Butterfly.
My set has a much more interesting grain in the elm veneer and a wonderful patina. The back of this one makes me think of Picasso every time I look at it and as such is my favourite:

Thanks for your reaction Pegboard,
estimation is at 250-300 $
There's only one, and I assume it serviced as a desk chair (as you imply).
Result of said auction tend to high above estimation though...
It is in a terrific good state (black leather and all).

Observation: As of right now Arne Hovmand Olsen has more mentions (3) than any other designer mentioned yet.
This is surprising to me, as he has a lot less of a profile than most of the other designers mentioned.

I simply must mention,
that I sat in a Thonet/ Breuer (as onno has displayed) on Saturday evening (dinner) at a new friends home. I found it quite nice. I wore Lillly.

I have to agree Leif
don't love the other stuff he did (find them quite generic even), but this chair is just wonderful.
I think this design beats Wegners wishbone for me.

I agree with Onno, familiarity has bred contempt with the Breuer chair but it has its own kind of elegance.
Unless I'm eating out I'm almost always eating at the computer in a Brno or in bed, it could be called slovenly but I prefer to think of myself as louche

A little acknowledged outsider - Poul Hundevad
I have a set of 4 of these chairs. These were my very first purchase ever and I still love them immensely. These are quite rare and it was pure chance that I bought them. The workmanship is superb. Made of Palisander which I believe is Scandinavian for Jacaranda but don't quote me. They are minimalistic, elegant, spare and almost Japanese in design and simplicity. They are wonderfully comfortable and match my jacaranda table.
Hundevad is known primarily as a manufacturer. He made the Guldhöj chair which is a copy of the oldest known Scandinavian chair found in the grave mound of a Danish king. Hundevad has had a documented colaboration with Kaj Winding who is a designer so it might be possible that these chairs are by Winding. However, comparing the Guldhöj with these chairs show some similarities so it could be that Hundevad IS the designer of these chairs.

I believe palissander is a family of different woods
like cocobolo, jacaranda, brazilian rosewoods...
very nice chairs.

If I wore a bra..it'd be on fire!
My what a lovely Wegner Chair. I feel like the last poster "in the extended (twice removed) family" to have not had the pleasure and/or familiarity with this sweet chair.
