Watched the whole thing yesterday. Will admit that I did not get much work done....
As for whether these were good buys or not, Harper made "only" a few hundred sculptures, approximately 300 of these pieces have entered the public market, and he was responsible for some iconic and important American design, including the Howard Miller / George Nelson ball clock (at least according to Harper), the Marshmallow sofa, the Coconut chair, etc., Wright's auction was a unique opportunity. This was it. There will never be more of paper sculptures by Irving Harper.
My hunch is that some of these pieces were purchased by dealers and will return to the market at some point in the future, but for many of these pieces, we will never see them again.
That said, I am probably a bit biased here. We (i.e. my wife) won a few lots in the auction yesterday, my favorite of which was lot 184 "Figure with Animal Skull." Definitely regret not pulling the trigger on lot 110, the running figure in a tumbleweed...
