Why are women's bras so badly designed?

This is partly asked to satisfy Riki's wish for more strange questions...and partly because, as a gay man, I've only recently discovered the poor design of women's bras. I'm caring for my elderly mother, and helping her get her bras on and off is mayhem of hooks and straps.

Are there no simple bras that lift...or whatever bras are supposed to do?

Gynecomastia
Bra evolution or de-evolution? Can't help notice all the media ads hawking improved versions; push-ups, miracle bras, body stockings, etc. Victoria Secrets uber laced designs are too much sometimes when the goal is to remove it not stare at it. But the concern for good bra design doesn't seem to be gender specific. Man boobs, Man bras, & manzeers have their own market. I dont think there is a definitive term for these male undergarments. Just to recall the classic episode....

You are a good son
to take care of your mom like that. I agree that bras that hook in the back are difficult to put on oneself, let alone trying to put one on another person. Try the ones that hook in the front, you just slip it over her arms like a vest. Maybe even a tight little t-shirt or cami would serve the same purpose as a bra and would be easier to put on and keep her warmer as well.
For the vast majority of people, bras are there to provide support, keep one's bits from bobbing about and provide a layer of modesty between one's skin and blouse so that no one can tell when you are cold, if you get what I mean.
All the other unnecessary extras are strictly for aesthetics/enhancement/the benefit of the partner, which is not necessarily a bad thing!
Never really pondered undergarment design before, but I'd bet a million dollars that the thong was definitely designed by a man!

Exactly.
I was absolutely referring to shower shoes.
On a more serious note, why will women put up with torture devices in the name of "beauty" that men would just scoff at? I'm talking about stilettos, thongs, and going back a few years, girdles, corsets, etc. My husband and sons cannot even tolerate a wrinkle in their socks inside their shoe if it is making them "uncomfortable".

Designs on you life TV programme
Here in the UK there were a few years ago a programme called designs on your life.
It looked at every thing from the urinal to the ladies bras.
Very interesting as it re-evalued ordinary items we use every day.
The guys behind it were the designers of the Motorbike for KTM
grey and orange in colour and very 2001 esque.
Try youtube etc or contact the bbc archives.

Riki
Women do it to attract men. Men in general respond to visual stimuli, unlike women, who go in more for verbal stimuli (so men can get away with dressing for comfort and not looks). And all of us are programmed to be attracted to genetically healthy mates because that insures the continuation of the species. Genetic health is exhibited by symmetrical features, a certain height range, straight limbs, good coloring, thick and shiny hair, etc. And all of that can be enhanced with makeup, hair products, and clothing.
So women endure discomfort in order to look good to attract men, and men work on pickup lines rather than wearing undergarments that minimize their paunches. It's how we're wired. Our standard of beauty comes from our base instincts, not from fashion mags.

Gee!
And I thought I wore a bra to keep my breasts from painfully bouncing all around. Who knew I did it to attact a mate?!?

You sly devil, you.
I'm verbose, and have thick and shiny hair. Women largely ignore me. What gives?

People!
There are always exceptions to the rule! I'm sure y'all know what a general statement is.
I am female and have never worn stilletos and have not even worn conventional high heeled shoes since i was maybe 21 or so, which was a really long time ago. And I don't wear makeup because it makes my eyes itch, and I've never colored my hair, and I wear glasses instead of contacts. I'm an exception but that doesn't negate the rule.

me...
Me, I wear a bra to stop my breasts bouncing around. You cant live with them, cant live without them. I would recommend a good sports bra though to use for everyday wear. They seem to be much more comfortable and better thought out.
The things we do for our mothers. A friend of mine recently, when his mother lost it a bit, was standing in her room at 3.00am in the morning with her false teeth up in the air in his hand pretending to talk to her with them. Hey, that's what she wanted and we all do love our mothers.
