A friend is looking to redo his library with 2 LC2's and an LC4. Hes got good taste in design, but not a lot of money at the moment (just graduated college). Who has the best repros of the LC2 and LC4 for the cheapest price?
To satisfy the label slaves, I have no doubt that over time my friend will swap out his repros for the originals as money permits. Hes far too much of a stickler.
label this
first of all, buying authorized furniture has nothing to do with being a "label slave"
Notice when buying a Knoll Womb Chair or other authorized furiture that the label is not noticable, versus a Louis Voutton handbag with the damn label all over it.
When your buying an authorized piece of furniture, tt sets a level of respect for the human mind who came up with the idea, as well as the quality of construction that backs it up.
However, if you or friend want to buy unauthorized furniture, thats your business.
To answer your question, Corbusier quality reproductions of this piece are harder to find than other designers. Look for key thing in construction like tube angle, that are a bended to and not cornered to a 90 degree angle and nylon webbing and not springs for pad supports. Also leather and foam quality are important components.
Good luck on finding your perfect ripoff LC2 styled furniture
intellectual property
is great, and I wouldnt buy a repro anywhere in the copyright protected time frame. But to assume that there have been no advances in furniture production in the near 100 years since LC produced this chair is erroneous. Also - after 100 years, who would look at this chair and think anything other than LeCorbusier?
Ps. I totally agree with you about the handbags. Nothing like paying 300$ to be a walking billboard - and what a gross brown color.
brown baggin' it
My girlfriend has a LV handbag, she got it in the back of a real estate office in Vegas. Part of me thinks that she only bought this illegal reproduction (I look at it, and it was top notch) was to be part of the cult following. She also bought a black Coach one and uses it every day. The Coach one has no noticable labels on it. I am still not sure why she bought them in the first place. She is still not even sure if they are real or not, because they are that good.
What I mean is that there are a lot of good quality reproductions of design that imitate the real deal. But why not wait till and save up to buy the real deal? Would you buy a fake Van Gogh or Warhol?
As far at IP law is concerned, I believe work on furniture and other things like that are covered up to 75 years after the designers death.
Good example
Good example using the Van Gogh or Warhol. At 23, very few people can afford works of art like that. But does that mean that you should only enjoy them ONLY in person? I truly do support buying original. I'm not, however, opposed to 'faking it' until the original can be obtained.
To furnish his library now, my friend could spend about $3000 - for ALL 3 pieces (repros). OR, he could spend almost that much on just a single licensed piece and furnish the rest of his library with... Ikea?
Being young and having good taste is an extremely difficult because the money usually just isnt there. I would LOVE a Saarinen table. A can AFFORD the Pottery Barn repro.
finding the perfect reproduction?.......priceless
Well I guess the Van Gogh was bad example seeing how the only people can afford his work are the likes of Steve Wynn. I guess you got my point anyways.
Personally, I don't like to do things twice.(which is other reason why I love timeless classic modern furniture)
Once I buy it, that's it I will never have to buy it again, unless it breaks down on me. But this furniture is always in style now matter what dwelling one would live in.
If i can't afford the real thing, I would just say "screw it" and go to Target until I have saved up money.
Getting a better job has been working for me. I got a bellman job on the Strip and it works well with school too.
How about not buying Corbusier style furniture, his lines are some of the more expensive out there, and even his fakes are expensive as well.
I've tried
I've tried convincing him to go elsewhere - he entertained the Eames Lounge (again, a knock off). The other choices I've seen are these bizarre high winged victorian things. I'd much rather see him have a fake LC than one of those. lol. (hes gonna kill me when he reads this)
I agree with you - buy something you love once. In a sense, replacing the fake LCs will fall into that category..since the style wont change at all.
Anyway - I'm heading into NYC next week. Does anyone have experience with White Furniture? I'm going to check out their showroom since some of their quality seems iffy on the web.
