I was searching ebay for this and found the following image of the underside sticker.
I always thought it came from Chuck and Ray but this says George Nelson! This was a surprise to me.
Who here knows about the design of this table or it's design process?
Thanks!

Label mistake
Charles and Ray did indeed design the table. The label is a mistake by a careless Herman Miller employee. I see that fairly frequently. You have to remember these pieces were cranked out of a factory, not made in an artist's studio. In their haste, employees sometimes stuck the wrong label on. I have Nelson pices that say designed by Charles Eames.
No big deal.
Crazy price
By the way, I was totally floored when I saw the table realize that price during the auction. That has to be an all-time record for that form. They usually go for between 2500 and 3500. There were clearly two very determined (and wealthy) people fighting over that table.
Carelessness or clumsy deceit?
We've all seen "Nelson" and "Eames" labels for sale. I wonder how often these sticker mixups are the result of a clumsy person trying to get a few extra dollars by placing a label on a previously marked piece compared to how many were a factory mix up 40 years ago?

My least favorite of the Eames catalogue. The only one of the lot I can say I will never own and don't care to. I wouldn't shell out a dime for that design. Ill-conceived.
EDIT: Seemed a bit harsh on Charles there. He is by far my favorite designer, to be fair. I just don't see the functionality of such a fantastically long coffee table so low to the ground.

I have always wondered about the design's purpose ... it is handsome. But at 8 feet or so and 10 inches high it's a little odd. I know few people with living rooms large enough to use this. Plus, I like to put my dinner on the coffee table while I watch the tube like everyone else. Unless you want to multi-task and tie your shoes simultaneously eating dinner on this is a drag.
The first thing someone will say is that it wasn't designed for dinner eating. That may be true, but it is a COFFEE table. ... meaning that it should function for coffee, tea, light snacking etc...
That's what I thought as well
but I recently bought one and though it is big it somehow still fits. I see it as a centerpiece around which you can gather and drink tea or have finger food. A couple of comfortable pillows on the floor and you're ready. Perfect height for keeping your feet on while reading the newspaper as well.
I guess if you're gonna sit o...
I guess if you're gonna sit on the floor it's fine, but it usually lives in front of a sofa (which means you will sit on the sofa more than likely). I can't imagine eating finger foods ten inches off the ground. I have an ltr, and I definitely don't use it for a dinner tray .... I usually use the old cheapo Aalto knockoff stool.
