It says A Rodrigues 16-12-68. Alternatively it might be Rodriguez with a z.
With an "s" at the end it is generally the Portuguese spelling, and with a z it is generally Spanish. However, in New World Spanish there is no difference between the the sounds "s" and "z" so the spelling tends to be very flexible.
Usually when furniture is signed by hand like this, especially upholstered furniture, it is the signature of the person who upholstered it or built it.

The numeral 1 is written the way I've seen it done in Europe, or at least in Denmark by more older people than young. I actually had a conversation years ago with a Danish friend about this. She said it wasn't taught anymore there. I don't know if the same style was in practice in all of Europe. This article might help (or might not):
